Committee Nominations
angusgr — Thu, 04/03/2010 - 10:15pm
We're going to register MakeHackVoid as an ACT Association. For registration, we need to nominate an initial committee of at least 7 people, including a President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.
The committee will have the responsibility of organising MakeHackVoid's affairs from now on. Forming an association allows us many new possibilities for growth. We can begin to cultivate an official membership. We will also have a legal entity that is capable of leasing property, and entering into other legal agreements.
We already have enough nominated committee members to meet the requirements for initial registration. However, if you are passionate and committed to developing MHV and the Canberra Maker Community, there is always room for one more. Nominate by jumping on the IRC channel, or email me directly - gus at projectgus dot com - before the end of the long weekend.

Association/incorporation?
peeknpoke — Fri, 05/03/2010 - 11:04pmI don't profess to know much about the details, but with a number of groups I have been involved in, they have found it better to register as an incorporation rather than as an association. I think it has to do with liability of the committee members. I suggest some research in this area before you register. Jack.
Hi Jack, Thanks for the
angusgr — Sun, 07/03/2010 - 7:17pmHi Jack,
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I should have been a bit more specific in the original article. The entity that we're planning to register as is in fact an "incorporated association".
I don't have any legal background, so this is all information I've picked up in the past couple of weeks, but my understanding is you can either register as a Public Company limited by guarantee, or as an Incorporated Association. The former is more expensive, and has more complex regulations and reporting requirements.
In both cases, liability of Company Directors and Association Committee Members is limited under most circumstances.
ASIC has a summary page here, and I found a good outline of potential association member liability (for the ACT) here.
But, like I said, I'm no kind of law-person. So if anyone thinks we should act otherwise, or I'm missed something important, please let us know!
