Membership
Outside of Maker Meetups, become a member to take advantage of MHV’s facilities and community. Our three membership options are Casual, Associate and Full.
Casual membership is aimed at people who want to hang out in the space, socialise and use their own laptops the majority of the time, only occasionally using the small tools provided by MHV.
Associate membership is aimed at people who want to regularly use the small tools, advanced tools and machines provided by MHV.
Full membership is available to members who have been nominated, because they are involved in the community and are trusted to have their own key. They get access to everything Associate members do as well as the ability to open the space and borrow tools.
Membership Cost
| Associate Membership | $9 a week ($40 a month.) |
| Full Membership | $13 a week ($60 a month.) |
| Casual Membership | $1 to join on your first visit. After that, $5/visit for evening/half day use & $10/visit for a full day (more than 4 hours.) See Casual Restrictions, below, for details. |
| Concession Associate Membership (for full-time students, Seniors Card holders & pensioners) | $4.50 a week ($20 a month.) |
| Concession Full Membership | $6.50 a week ($30 a month.) |

Casual Restrictions
(*) Casual Members pay a per-visit casual use fee if they are working with tools (including their own, as this comes under our insurance) or using the facilities in the space. Social visits & laptop use dosen’t require payment.
(**) More complex tools cannot be used by casual members. However, feel free to find an Associate or Full member who knows how to use the tool safely, and ask them nicely if they could do it for you. If everyone in the space is busy then you can try posting on the mailing list.
Household Memberships
We offer discounts if you have more than one budding Hacker in your household. Every new member who is also a member of your household gets 50% off their additional membership costs.
Household memberships can cover a couple, a family with children over 16, or a Hacker sharehouse. For example, a family of four (two adults, two full time students) can join as a household of Associates for $80/month (First non-concession member $40/month, second non-concession 50% off so $20/month, two student memberships also 50% off so $10/month.)
Household Membership is designed for couples, families, and people living together. It is offered with the understanding that Households will usually be coming to the space together. If people appear to be abusing Household Membership, or always coming to the space independently of one other, then the committee reserves the right to ask those people to buy individual memberships.
How To Become a Casual Member
Joining as a casual member is really easy - just show up at the space some time when it is open! You’ll need to have $1, and a Full Member at the space will show you how to fill in the membership form (it's online, but you need to be physically in the space to use it - this link will only work if you are there.)
How To Become an Associate Member
Step One - Decide what payment cycle you’d like.
Renew every... Associate Membership Cost (Individual) Month $40 ($20 concession) 3 months $120 ($60 concession) 6 months $240 ($120 concession) Step Two - Check out the rules of the Hackerspace (including conditions of membership) and make sure that you agree to abide by them. That’s important for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.
Step Three - Bank transfer your first payment to:
- Name: Make, Hack, Void Incorporated
- BSB : 012-951
- Account No: 2509-92065
Use your full name as the payment description.
The MHV account is with the ANZ Bank.
Step Four - If you can, use internet banking to set up a schedule for your future payments. At the moment, that’s the best way to keep your membership current.
Step Five - A Full Member at the space will show you how to fill in the membership form (it's online, but you need to be physically in the space to use it - this link will only work if you are there.) If you're upgrading an existing Casual membership then you don't need to fill in the form twice, just email treasurer at makehackvoid dot com and let them know that you've paid and would like to upgrade.
Step Six - Congratulate yourself on your new Hackerspace membership.
Step Seven - Get down to the space and hack on stuff!
How To Become a Full Member
You only need to become a full member if you want your own key to the space. This is the only kind of membership that is not available to brand new members.
Step One - Sign up for an associate membership and get involved in the community:
- Come along to the space, including to Maker Meetups.
- Help other Makers with their projects.
- Volunteer to help out when you can.
- Be a power for awesome in the community.
Step Two - Once you've been involved with the space for a while, you'll need to be nominated by another Full Member and then have that nomination seconded by two more Full Members.
The nominators & seconders much vouch that you:
- Are familiar with the space
- Regularly attend
- Have met the majority of regular attendees
- Are trustworthy
- Are familiar with Make, Hack, Void's rules, lore and customs.
Step Three - Once this is recorded at a committee meeting or on the committee mailing list, you become eligible (yay!) Now you should contact the treasurer - treasurer at makehackvoid dot com - and ask about payment. If you have time left on your Associate membership, it can be pro rata upgraded to Full.
Renew every... Full Membership Cost (Individual) Month $60 ($30 concession) 3 months $180 ($90 concession) 6 months $360 ($180 concession) Step Four - The person who nominated you, and the seconders, are responsible for inducting you as a full member. This includes arranging a key and an alarm code. Also showing you how to open the space, how to sign up new members, how to accept casual access fees, etc.
Step Five - Back to the awesome making and voiding!
FAQ
Can anyone become a member?
Anyone over 18 can become a Casual or Associate member.
Full Membership is different - because Full Members get their own key to the space, they have to meet the conditions described above.
If I’m an Associate Member, how often is the space open for me?
At the moment the space is open regularly nearly every Tuesday & Thursday evening, most Saturday afternoons, and many Sundays. Plus often at other times. If you join the Makers mailing list then you’ll see posts when people plan to open the space, or when the space is open. See also the calendar for organised openings.
What about hackers under 18 (minors)?
Due to our insurance, only those 18 & over may use tools at MHV. Although they cannot become members, minors are welcome at Maker Meetups, or for social visits in the meeting area & couches.
Those under 16 can visit the space when accompanied by a responsible adult who takes responsibility for their safety & conduct.
There are no fees associated with minors coming to the space.
I have another question.
You can email the MHV Treasurer - treasurer at makehackvoid dot com, email the MHV Secretary - secretary at makehackvoid dot com, and/or email the Makers Mailing list.
